"Terra Ferma" - Preparing for Worship, March 12 2017

Both sermons this week deal with confidence, but coming at it from different angles. Take courage in the midst of the storm!

Morning Worship – “Terra Ferma”

Our theme for the morning is courage. Many things we do in life require courage, and faith is one of them. It takes courage to pursue the promises. How can we supplement our faith with courage?

Passages for Meditation

  • 27:13-14. Read the psalm as a whole. What is the ground of the author’s confidence that he will see the land or the Lord? Moses didn’t; are we more righteous than he?
  • Joshua 1:1-8. What would the consequences be for Joshua if he wasn’t courageous? How have we seen that play out already in the narrative? And how is Joshua supposed to grow his courage?

Questions for Consideration

  • What are some of the main areas where your faith lacks courage? Where is your faith cowardly?
  • Under normal circumstances, fear is often rational. It would be right for Joshua to be fearful of going into the land. How does our faith change that reasoning? Why is it irrational for a Christian to fear the things that are frightening?

Hymns for Proclamation

  • 642- “Be Though my Vision.” How does this hymn encourage us to take heart?

Evening Worship

Last week we looked at the warning passages in Hebrews. Those passages are unsettling; they are designed to get us to question ourselves, to examine our faith critically and systematically. Though that can be a useful process, Hebrews doesn’t want us to stay there. The goal is not confusion but assurance. This week we turn to the hope that we have, to the promises of God, secured by an oath. How do God’s promises enable us to remain certain in the midst of the uncertainty of our wilderness wandering?

  • Psalm: 119
  • Hymn of the Month: 306. Jesus My Great High Priest
  • Sermon Text: Hebrews 6:13-20.
  • Final Hymn: Great is Thy Faithfulness
