Morning Worship – “The Anointed One”

Merry Christmas! This Sunday begins our official Christmas Series, which is entitled “His Name Shall be Called….”  This year we are looking at the names of Jesus. Famous and important people tend to receive many names and titles. Actually, you don’t have to be famous to have a special name—many of us no doubt have received nicknames and special ascriptions from those who love us most. Jesus receives many names, each reflecting some slightly different aspect of who he is and what he has done for us.

First up, Jesus is “the Anointed One.”

Passages for Meditation

  • Matthew 16:15-16
  • Hebrews 1:1-9. What names does Jesus receive in this passage?
  • Psalm 2. What is the role of God’s anointed in this passage?
  • Sermon text: Luke 2:8-20

Questions for Consideration

  • The “chosen one” motif is common in literature. What is Jesus anointed to do? How does that make him unique?
  • If Jesus is anointed by God, how does that affect our relationship to him? What is he for us?

Hymns for Proclamation

  • 218 – Angels from the Reals of Glory
  • 200 – It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
  • 207 – Good Christian Men Rejoice. How is our joy a response to Christ’s anointing?

Evening Worship – “Your Kingdom Come”

So technically the evening sermon is not part of our Christmas series, but given the title, we might smuggle in a Christmas Reflection or two. How do the realities of Christmas affect our prayer life?

  • Examining Ourselves. We will be celebrating communion in the evening. As you prepare, consider your prayer life.
  • Psalm 146. We couldn’t hope for a better Psalm for our evening sermon if we tried. “Put not your trust in princes.” Except for one, of course, the Prince of Peace!
  • Hymns to consider. We will have the great privilege of singing 195 – Joy to the World for the first time in 2017 this evening. This is classified in our hymnal as an advent hymn. In what ways does it fit the bill? In what ways does it not.
  • Sermon Text: Colossians 1. What is the relationship between Christ’s Kingdom and the individual Christian? Why is Christ’s kingdom a matter of joy and thanksgiving? How does it change the way Paul prays?
